A British man has died after a luxury yacht sailing near a resort in Sardinia, Italy, crashed into rocks, it is reported.

The 63-year-old man from England was unconscious but still breathing when first responders from the coast guard arrived at the boat off Porto Cervo on Sunday evening, local media reports.

However, medics were unable to save the man’s life and he passed away at the scene.

Six other people were also on board the luxury vessel and all were said to have been hurt as a result of the tragic collision.

Authorities said the man suffered fatal injuries when the boat, which measured 70ft, collided with rocks just off the coastline.

It is believed that the yacht may have belonged to the man who died in the accident, La Stampa reported.

Emergency services rushed to the shoreline to assist those who were injured in the crash, including two passengers who are in a serious condition after being admitted to hospital.

The incident took place at around 8.40pm while the group was sailing in front of the Li Nibani islands.

Preliminary reports suggest that the crash may have occurred after the yacht’s captain moved the boat suddenly in an effort to avert a collision with another vessel.

Part of the boat was submerged under water after crashing into the rocks but it has since been recovered by authorities and towed to the port of Porto Cervo where it has been impounded for investigation work.

The scene of the collision is also being manned by the coastguard.
